The Department of Mine Engineering at the University of Kurdistan started formally to admit students for AS (Associate of Science) program in Mining from 1998. Additionally, the department has embarked on admitting students for BSc program in Mine Exploration Engineering since 2003. Afterwards, MSc program in Mine Exploration Engineering was founded in the department in 2015.
Here are some of the short-term programs of the department: offering BSc courses in Mining, starting MSc program in Rock Mechanics, and establishing the PhD program in Mine Exploration.
Skills and Capabilities of the Graduates
  • Utilizing geological data (maps and sections)
  • Determining the most appropriate exploratory method according to scientific and technical data related to the area under exploration
  • Designing optimal grid for initial exploration (geophysics, geochemistry and excavation)
  • Selecting the most appropriate anomalies in accordance with their significance and based on economic factors
  • Designing a detailed exploration grid for the selected anomalies and participating in different exploratory operations
  • Calculating base, fineness and ore deposit parameters and evaluating them in economic terms
  • Using obtained data in the course of mining operations to shed more light on base, fineness and ore deposit parameters
Faculty of Engineering
Faculty of Engineering
The principal aim of the Faculty of Engineering is to create a friendly and creative learning and research environment that best matches the particular needs of students
Laboratories and Workshops
Microscopic Laboratory
In this laboratory, the optical characteristics of minerals and rocks are explored and identified at microscopic scales. To do such explorations, polarized light microspores are used.
ICP Laboratory
Prepared mineral samples are tested either in the form of solution or powder by the advanced device that has been installed in the given laboratory. Accordingly, probable isotopes of minor and rare elements will be identified and examined. It should be noted that they are recently used in geochemical studies and higher education projects.
Descriptive Mineral Laboratory
This laboratory is intended to investigate handmade samples of rock-forming silicate minerals and non-silicate and silicate minerals based on their physical properties. In addition, silicate and non-silicate minerals are classified according to their chemical base. Last but not least, major types of minerals (the handmade samples) are identified in the laboratory.
Cartography Laboratory
Working methodology for general and specialized maps particularly large-scale topographical and geological maps, drawing topographic sections and deep geological profiles, conducting field surveys and preparing geological reconnaissance report, understanding aerial and satellite imagery, understanding conceptual parameters of rock layers and, ultimately, recording and processing methods are all included in this laboratory.
Rock Section Preparation Workshop
In Section Preparation Workshop, thin and polished sections of handmade rocks and minerals are provided and, as a consequence, it would be possible to conduct a microscopic study on them.
Mineral Processing Laboratory
The Mineral Processing Laboratory analyzes those methods utilized to separate useless minerals (i.e. minerals without economic value) from metallic and non-metallic minerals which are economically valuable.
Geophysics Laboratory
The Geophysics Laboratory concentrates on different geophysical methods, working with diverse devices, preparing  maps and, finally, investigating the existing software.
Rock Mechanics Laboratory
There are distinct devices to measure the physical and mechanical properties of rocks in this laboratory. Measurable properties include uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus (elastic modulus), Poisson’s ratio, point load index, Schmidt hardness, wave velocity in rocks, the shear strength of rock, etc.
Additionally, cylindrical cores in the range of 54-101 mm can be made using the coring machine in order to do a variety of tests on the cores. Physical properties such as density, porosity (void fraction) and similar cases can be measured in this laboratory as well.
Surveying Workshop
This workshop provides the students with different devices and specific cameras to conduct mine surveying operations.
Geology Museum of Professor Hossein Moein Vaziri
Rock samples donated by Professor Hossein Moein Vaziri are kept in this museum. It is open for visitors and students.
