The Department of Physics began its educational activities in 1992. The department started with the presence of Abdolhasan Basireh and Muhammad Reza Foroumand in the main faculty of the time; i. e. the current faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Up to 1994, the department mainly focused on presenting basic physics courses and their laboratories for Chemistry and Mathematics students. In the first years of its activity, the department established and equipped its General Physics labs.
In the summer of 1994, UOK hosted the annual Physics Conference. Regarding what the participants declared, as well as that of the heads of Iran’s Physics Society, this conference was one of the greatest ever held across the country.
In the fall of 1994, the very first students of Physics applied for the University of Kurdistan in B.S. in Physics Teaching. In 1995, 1996 and 1997, the university established and equipped the laboratories of Physics III, Modern Physics and Optics, respectively. In the next coming years, the Department accepted students for Physics Teaching, BS Physics, and MS physics of Solid and Theoretical Physics. The very first MS and PhD students of the department started their academic years in 2003 and 2007, respectively.

The department afterwards, established Nuclear and Nano-Research Labs and it has got its Photonic Lab being established.
Through the passage of time, as the university grew in the number of its engineering fields, the department also expanded its activities in order to provide the other departments with Basic Physics courses.
For now, the department has got PhD students in 5 different majors; Cosmology and Astrophysics, Fundamental Particles and Field Theory, Solid State Physics, Photonics, and Quantum Information and Computations, as well as two majors for BS students; Solid and Theoretical Physics.
