The department of Mathematics has the honor to be the first department in the University of Kurdistan. In 1979, after receiving the license from the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education, the Sanandaj School of Teacher Training started with its only department, i.e. the department of Mathematics. Since its start ‘till 1993, the department only admitted undergraduate students to be trained as math teachers. From 1993 on, with the license of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the undergraduate students of Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics have been accepted through a national university entrance examination. In 2005 and 2007, the department of Mathematics succeeded in obtaining a student admission license in Master's degree in applied and Pure Mathematics, respectively. In 2011, the department received a license for admitting PhD students in Pure Mathematics with two sub-branches of Algebra and Analysis, and in Applied Mathematics with the sub-branch of Numerical Analysis. This way, the faculty stepped up at a higher level of its scientific role.
Since 2010, following the decision of the Ministry of Science for all universities, the admission of  Math students has been limited to a new field as Mathematics and Applications. At present, the admission is made in all three levels;  Undergraduate (one field), Master (two main fields and four sub-branches) and Ph.D. (two fields and three sub-branches).

Mathematics Workshop
The workshop was set up in 2010 with 21 computer systems, a video projector, and other educational equipment to improve the quality of teaching the curriculums that require teaching programming and analyzing the results of software tests.

Computer Center for the Department of Mathematics
Located on the third floor of the faculty of sciences, this center consists of 12 computers for the students of the department. Managing the access to the center is the responsibility of the department of Mathematics. Managing all computer affairs, both software and hardware, as well as the network is the responsibility of the Technology Center of the faculty. Mathematical software such as Matlab, Maple, Amiss, etc., are installed on all the computers and the students can complete their course exercises and term projects in the computer center throughout the year. Internet access in this center is permanently available for the students.

Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics
Currently, the Department of Mathematics admits bachelor students in Teacher Training, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics and Applications. Since 2010 (according to the decision of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology for all universities), the admission of undergraduate students has been limited to Mathematics and Applications.
