UOK’s department of Water Engineering was established in 2006 in the faculty of Agriculture. The department enrolled in the undergraduate program in the academic year of 2006-07. In the academic year of 2007-08, the master's course was established with the admission of 6 students in Irrigation and Drainage trends.

Under-Pressure Irrigation Lab

In this lab, students will get familiar with a variety of types of pressurized irrigation systems, components and equipment of the systems, and the way they can be used and maintained. Considering the importance of familiarizing students with various types of under-pressure irrigation systems, the laboratory has tried to be up to date, full, and providing.

General Irrigation Laboratory

Conductive experiments
  • Determining the bulk density of soil
  • Determining the soil moisture using weight and volume methods and gypsum blocks and tensiometer
  • Determining moisture coefficients of Field Capacity (F.C) and Permanent Wilting Point (P.W.P) using pressure plate device
  • Flow measurement using overflows, stomata and flumes
  • Measuring the hydraulic conductivity coefficient busingy fixed load and falling load method
  • Direct measurement of plants’ evaporation and transpiration using microlysemers

Hydraulic Lab

The Hydrological Laboratory of UOK’s department of Water Sciences and Engineering was equipped and exploited in 2014. The tools and equipment in this lab provide students with the opportunity to observe the principles, concepts, and theories of flow in pressured and open-air channels presented in the theoretical lesson, as well as the chance to draw a comparison between the results from the gained experience and the theoretical concepts.
The laboratory is divided into two parts; Hydraulic and Hydraulic Fluid, both analyzed in pressure pipes and open channels according to the facilities available in each section,
Conductive Experiments of the Hydraulic Section
Reynolds number test, pressure drop test, measuring energy loss including longitudinal and localized loss in tubes, Bernoulli theory, load loss in knees and bends, hydrostatic pressure, floating point balance, orifice, stomatal flow test.
Conductive Experiments of the Hydraulic Flow Section
Overflow tests, water flow analysis from various overflows including sharp edges and broad edges, observation of turbulent, subcritical, and supercritical flows and their practical separation, hydraulic channel testing, checking the flow of sliding and sloping valves, checking the flow through the peak, steps and cramps overflow, measuring pressure and velocity, checking the jump and the factors affecting it.

Water Quality Lab

Due to the lack of water resources, it is necessary to use non-standard water of low quality in agriculture. The physical and chemical qualities of water affect the soil characteristics, plant growth and the quantitative and qualitative yields. Therefore, it is of great importance to  monitor the physical and chemical properties of water.
One of the educational goals of the Water Quality Laboratory, established in October 2015, is to conduct a practical unit of water quality at the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition to its educational objectives, this laboratory helps the students to do scientific research in the field of master's thesis, research projects, etc.
Conductive experiments
  • Determining the concentration of total water soluble using an electric conductivity meter
  • Determining the water samples’ base or acidity using pH meters
  • Measuring the amount of dissolved oxygen in water samples using a DO meter
  • Mixing different materials in water using an adjustable agitator and temperature
  • Separating the components of a solution using a customizable centrifuge device
  • Concentration measurement of some existing elements in water such as nitrate, nitrite, arsenic, lead, etc. using spectrophotometer
  • Using different types of digital scales with various accuracy
