The field of Horticultural Science is a combination of sciences, arts and techniques in the areas of botany, plant physiology, improvement and development of new methods inpomology, olericulture, floriculture, medicinal plants, post-harvest quality improvement, post –harvest waste reduction, and genetic modification of plants in traditional and modern methods.

The Faculty of Agriculture has been admitting graduate students of Herbal Production Sciences -Gardening branch - since 2001. Before, these students used to be under the supervision of the Department of Agronomy. The department grew into a separate and independent one in October 2003 and it also became able to work in the interrupted undergraduate degree in the field of horticulture, admitting 30 students.
In 2006, this department started admitting students for the bachelor's degree in Horticultural Science.
