Agriculture situation in Kurdistan province

The province of Kurdistan has a great potential in production of agricultural crops. The total area in Kurdistan province is 28235 km2 which has 1.7% of Iran. The major part is located on Zagros mountain range, hence posses a unique physiographic and climatic condition. There are several kinds of lands in this province including high mountains, deep valleys, hillside lands, plateaus, low lands. Several climates exists in Kurdistan province which are including semi-arid to cold semi-arid with the average rain fall of 250 mm (Bijar) or semi humid in the west of province with the average rain fall of 800 mm (Marivan) exists in Kurditan province. The highest place is “Chehel Cheshmeh” mountain with the height of 3170 m above sea level and the lowest place is “Sirvan district” with the height 680 m above sea level.

The east and central regions in Kurdistan province have been affected by the weather of central parts of Iran, while the west part has been affected by the Mediterranean weather. Total area in province consists of 49.6 %( 1400,000 hec) pastures; 11.3% (320,000 hec) jungles and 39.1% (1100, 000) farmlands. The average annual rainfall is 500 mm, resulting in 14,000,000,000 m2 water.  Kurdistan province is among the provinces with highest rainfall in Iran. The major part of surface water resources is exist in the west of province; while the majority of ground water is exist in the east part, especially in Qorveh and Dehgolan lands. The total sum of runoff is 7.8 miliard m2, which the major part of it is in “Sirvan district”. Just 17% of total water resources are being used today. For the time being, there are some problems to develop an efficient use of these water resources; the most part of surface water resources exists in the regions do not have enough soil resources, 80% of surface water is runned over the west of province while the major potential of soil resources exists in the east part of province. Ground water resources consist of 3688 fountains, 245 Qanats (Kariz), 63484 deep and semi-deep wells. The farmland area is about 219,000 hectare, which mainly located in Dehgolan (63000 ha), Qorveh (58000 ha), Bijar (53000 ha), Marivan (13000 ha) and Kamyaran (11000 ha).  Around 390,000 ha of agricultural lands could be irrigated. The annual crop production of Iran is 73 million tone, which the province of Kurdistan produced 2.1% (1480, 000 tons) of this amount. The province of Kurdistan possesses 9.2% of total cultivated area of reinfed cereals which had first rank in cultivated area and production of rainfed cereals. It is noticeable that 3.2% of Iran creals (Irrigated and Non-irrigated) is produced in Kurdistan province.

Graduate Program in Plant Biotechnology

The Graduate Program (M.Sc.) in Plant Biotechnology has been formulated with an objective of advancing education and research in the area of plant biotechnology. The focus of the program is to utilize the tools and techniques of Molecular Biology to enhance sustainable and profitable agricultural production systems as well as discovery and engineering of therapeutic proteins in plants. The research interests of the Department are extremely broad across the plant sciences and food safety. The Department conducts programs in many areas including:

·         Molecular detection of plant pathogens

  • Biotechnological interventions for enhancing secondary metabolite production
